“Top Brass” is the first single from Matt Berry’s upcoming album Simplicity, a collaboration with esteemed Library Music label KPM (album due for release in November 2023). KPM is well known for providing “library music” for use as signature tunes or incidental music; the label has been a “musical bedrock” for classics of British television and cinema and its music regularly sampled by high profile commercial artists.
The cover of this 7” vinyl single version of “Top Brass” (out now) echoes the classic KPM 1000 series of records originally released in the 70s – also known as vinyl “greensleeves” – albeit modified for the Acid Jazz label. The track itself, which is also available on download and streaming in the usual places, is a rhythmic instrumental, with Berry playing almost everything – bass, electric and acoustic guitars, electric and upright pianos, Solina string ensemble, xylophone and Mellotron – with Craig Blundell on drums and assorted percussion. Alluringly atmospheric and hip, it bodes well for the album to come.
