Nick Corbin & The Hang Ups: Feelin’ Kinda Lucky

Nick Corbin is an East London based singer and songwriter as well as the founder of soul specialist label, Big AC Records. Until February 2018, Corbin was the singer and main songwriter of indie soul group New Street Adventure; he has also written for two of our favourites, Emma Noble and Carmy Love, and regularly collaborates with emerging artists on the UK soul and funk scene.

“Feelin’ Kinda Lucky” is the first single from studio work with his impressive touring band The Hang Ups, made up of Sahil Batra (here on the Wurlitzer), Stephen Springall (lead guitar), Florian Bel (bass) and Michael Hussain (drums and percussion), with further contributions from Corbin (rhythm guitar), Harry Greene (tenor sax), Luke Vice-Coles (trumpet) and Kitty Liv Durham (tambourine).

This track was recorded direct to tape at Kitty, Daisy & Lewis’ Durham Sound Studio in Kentish Town and evokes an energetic and edgy sound reminiscent of Muscle Shoals. Corbin says the song is about waking up and feeling as though all is right in the world – “you don’t know why or how but you carry that energy and satisfaction through the day”. This sense is captured through a breezy vocal and dynamic musical arrangement that builds anticipation to a raucous outro intentionally sped up, taking good advantage of the analogue recording process.

Available on download and 7” vinyl.
